The beautiful 300 SL W198 I offered here is one of the earliest examples built. According to the register of the Gull Wing Group this car was built on special order and finished on 15 October 1954. As a new car it was finished in the rare colour white grey (DB 158) - a very attractive white-grey colour - with red leather interior.
This car was delivered to the United States and was initially owned by William Scace, a production manager from Chicago. During his ownership Mr. Scace drove this gullwing and his Porsche 356 Carrera Cabriolet in the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Later in the 1950's, he drove a 300 SL Roadster and Corvette in Bonneville and set a national speed record in 1968.

At the beginning of its history, possibly in the hands of its first owner, the original engine of this car was replaced by the number 5500490, which came from another gullwing with the chassis 5500122. In the late 1950s and 1960s the 300 SL remained in Illinois and was later owned by the famous car collector Carl De Bickero, who owned many vintage Ferraris as well as several 300 SL, Rolls-Royce and a BMW 507. Later the car was sold to Ann Horwich from Los Angeles and stayed in Southern California for some years.

In the 1990s Harold Stevens from Salt Lake City, Utah bought the gullwing and his next owner Jack Plumb did a complete restoration on the highest level. This included repainting the 300 SL in its original, elegant white-grey colour. A blue leather was chosen for the interior upholstery, which lends special expression to the charm of this exceptional coupé.

The gullwing has been in a private collection since its restoration and has recently been serviced to ensure that it runs and drives as well as it looks. The car is beautiful throughout, with excellent paintwork, chrome and glass, a well finished cockpit and a very tidy, beautifully detailed engine bay and chassis. All the correct data plates and stamps are in place and the car comes with a user manual, spare parts list, workshop manual and tool kit.

This is an extremely rare and exciting opportunity to own one of the 167 gullwing cars built in the first year of production - a wonderful specimen in a coveted original paint scheme, with a remarkable documented history and a high quality restoration. Translated with (free version)
