The number 20 tells a unique story!
As the twentieth Gullwing produced, this sensational Hjeltness restoration displays all the early features that made the early production examples so sought after by Mercedes enthusiasts. Finished to the highest standards by one of the world's most renowned 300 SL restoration workshops, this multiple Concours-winning gullwing is in stunning, immaculate condition. Sensation.
This very early 300 SL coupe left the factory on September 30, 1954, originally painted DB190 gray, with blue vinyl/blue checkered seats and blue leather interior, it was destined for the prestigious Mercedes- Benz agent Max Hoffman's in New York. This particular car, chassis No. 20, has numerous "prototype" features that only the first 50 cars, of the total 1,400 examples, have and are remnants of the 1952 race cars on which the 300 SL coupe was based. All distinguishing features are documented and confirmed down to the smallest detail and clearly distinguish this coupe from series production. An absolute rarity among the already sought-after 300 SL Coupés.
According to the Gullwing Group Registry, the first owner of Coupé No. 20 was Roy Miller of China Lake, USA. In the early 1970s, Weston Hook of La Jolla, California, became the owner, who cared for the car over the next four decades, eventually passing it on to his son. Weston Hook spent time in both California and Hawaii, the latter being the center of his real estate business, and so the car shuttled between the two sunny Pacific locations. After several decades of ownership and use, Hook commissioned Jerry Hjeltness, arguably the most renowned 300 SL restorer in Escondido, California, to perform a restoration, the results of which can be succinctly described as extraordinary. Over the course of two years and with great attention to detail, the wing with the number 20 was completely restored down to the smallest detail and painted in the contemporary Mercedes colors DB 543 Strawberry Red Metallic. The combination with beige leather interior and green checkered seats is stylish and extraordinary. Matching luggage and chrome Rudge wheels complete the undeniably beautiful appearance that attracts attention in any society. The result of this restoration has inevitably led to many concours wins in class and in entire showrooms. The car is simply a "best-of-the-best" restoration, by one of the best 300SL restorers.
