In September 1985, at the IAA in Frankfurt, the completely revised SL model range of the 107 series was presented. In addition to a discreet facelift, which primarily affected the front spoiler and wheels, and improved front suspension, the main focus was on restructuring the engine range. A newly designed 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which had made its debut in the W 124 midsize series nine months earlier, replaced the tried-and-true 2.8-liter dohc engine, as it had in the S-Class sedan. Thus, after an interruption of 22 years, there was once again a sports car with the magical type designation 300 SL.
